Default trunk handle slipping 1939 Mercury

The lock cylinder is out, lifting the cylinder released, the handle turns part way then gets harder to turn and does not release. I suspect the square is worn and slipping. Wishful thinking here, there is a hole on the right side of the handle body that is attached to the trunk lid. I can't tell if it is a roll pin, screw or something else in there. Can anyone tell me what it is and if I get it out will the handle come off?

I've read all the posts I can find, way too old to crawl through the back seat.

Many thanks for all the help and education this board has given me.
