trunk handle slipping 1939 Mercury The lock cylinder is out, lifting the cylinder released, the handle turns part way then gets harder to turn and does not release. I suspect the square is worn and slipping. Wishful thinking here, there is a hole on the right side of the handle body that is attached to the trunk lid. I can't tell if it is a roll pin, screw or something else in there. Can anyone tell me what it is and if I get it out will the handle come off?https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nRf...ew?usp=sharing
I've read all the posts I can find, way too old to crawl through the back seat. Many thanks for all the help and education this board has given me. |
Re: trunk handle slipping 1939 Mercury Did you retract the lock bolt with a small screwdriver? The cylinder can drive the bolt in and out with the cylinder out the bolt can still be extended. If the trunk is open remove the nut retaining the handle to the lock mechanism and pull the handle out.

Re: trunk handle slipping 1939 Mercury Terry,
Yes, I lifted the lock bolt and the handle turns easily for a ways then gets stiffer but does not release the trunk latch. I'm guessing the square is worn and is slipping. I tried pushing the lid down while turning the handle, also tried pulling on the handle outward while turning but no luck. Thanks, Bruce |
