Why does it still have the steering wheel?

‘Cause you need the column for the spark, throttle and lights, and it’s a pain to remove the wheel and then reinstall the light rod, would be my guess.

Locomotives have 4 wheels on the front truck so that it will follow curves in the railway.

Okay, what do they do when a train is coming? That can't drive off of the tracks, I don't think.

The service cars followed a schedule like any locomotive. They would get off on a side track when a train was coming. The switches were manually operated. Just get your assistant to throw the switch to the side track and then switch it back for the train.
Is an octo AA a very high note? I know nothing about music notation.

I don't know about musical notes, but was observing that if the fourth axle is driving the third then it looks to me like it might be a longer AA wheelbase vehicle!
