My B motor rebuild is coming along slowly , getting converted to shell bearings , 6.1 head ect .
I have been thinking about putting strong magnets in the engine sump and gearbox and diff to collect all those metal bits that seem to appear over time. Is this thought to be a good idea.I have to imagine this has been done before magnetic sump plugs were a thing , just wondered about any draw backs ? Last edited by headonz; 02-17-2025 at 10:38 PM. |

I have magnetic drain plugs in my transmission, Mitchell O/D and rear end. In the engine most of the metal that wears is non-ferrous but it can't hurt to put a magnetic drain plug in..

I use magnitic drain plugs as well. I made them by boring a depression in the plug and epoxying a round magnet.

The magnet cannot hurt. Added to the drain plug means you can clean it during an oil change. The best protection is a full flow oil filter.

One of those strong super magnets on the outside of the filter may work best. I think I will do that.

On the outside is something I hadn't thought of ..... BUT "Heat is bad for them. Some or all holding power is lost above the maximum "working temperature". For N42 type "...80°C is the maximum operating temperature."--kjmagnetics Something I did not know about magnets. |

Best to use the magnets that only have a north pole. If you find one, apply for a Nobel prize.
