Magnet in sump ?
 

My B motor rebuild is coming along slowly , getting converted to shell bearings , 6.1 head ect .


I have been thinking about putting strong magnets in the engine sump and gearbox and diff to collect all those metal bits that seem to appear over time.


Is this thought to be a good idea.I have to imagine this has been done before magnetic sump plugs were a thing , just wondered about any draw backs ?

I have magnetic drain plugs in my transmission, Mitchell O/D and rear end. In the engine most of the metal that wears is non-ferrous but it can't hurt to put a magnetic drain plug in..

I use magnitic drain plugs as well. I made them by boring a depression in the plug and epoxying a round magnet.

The magnet cannot hurt. Added to the drain plug means you can clean it during an oil change. The best protection is a full flow oil filter.

I put a magnet on the bottom of the gas tank, even have one on the Cub tractor.

I put a magnet on the outside of the oil pan, opposite the oil pump. Then remove it just before draining the oil.

One of those strong super magnets on the outside of the filter may work best. I think I will do that.

I bought some of these magnets from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I swear they are the strongest magnets I have come across. I can't even pull them apart. I have already given myself blood blisters a couple of times when they snapped together!!

On the outside is something I hadn't thought of ..... BUT


"Heat is bad for them. Some or all holding power is lost above the maximum "working temperature".
For N42 type "...80°C is the maximum operating temperature."--kjmagnetics

Did you know that steel when heated to 1417° F will also lose its magnetic properties :D

and gold and copper around 2100 and plat goes to 3000

Nickel I believe loses it's magnetic around 417° and it returns as it cools!!!

Best to use the magnets that only have a north pole. If you find one, apply for a Nobel prize.

I epoxy these little dudes into pieces of hardwood to make wood jaw vise inserts for holding sensitive items. I’ve also used them to hold patch panels in place for butt welding. Lots of uses around the shop.

A puddle of steel would be 2500°F - 2700°F depending on its amount of carbon content
1417°F is just nice and red. Fahrenheit or as we know it "freedom units not communist units :D

Thank you, the car was purchased new in Virginia by a young man who then drove it to California. He joind the Navy and became a coreman (doctor) When he got out of the navy he stayed in San Diego where he started his private practice as a doctor using the coupe for his house calls around San Diego's Point Loma area. In 1973 or 1974 he quit driving due to his age then and the family parked it on some property they have east of San Diego where it sat until I purchased it in 2022.
The picture is where it sat for the last 50 years
