The speedometer in my 46 started howling today. Is there an easy shot of lubricant fix up, or do I have to climb under there and take it out and send it off? Thanks guys. Rich

Pull the inner cable out and grease it. Not the only reason for them to howl, but maybe the easiest to try.

If you pull the speedo there is a small hole for light oil. I used a toothpick to drop oil into the wick as I turned the speedo with a battery drill. That cured my howling on my 41. Other than wiggling around wires, it doesn't come out too badly

If you pull it apart use lithium grease when installing. in my opinion.

Thanks guys. I disconnected the cable from the speedometer and it was dead silent, so it must be in the speedometer head. I have some hypodermic needles from my dogs allergy medication, if I use one to squirt oil into the above mentioned hole, does anyone think it will work without pulling the speedometer? Thanks Rich By the way, Paul, I like your line of thought. My dad would say "just like digging clams, you always take the easy ones first!"

Also, support the cable with a wire tie so that it enters the speedo at 90 degrees and remains at 90 degrees. This reduces stress on cable.

As said, a small hole at 12 o'clock just after the cable threads. There is a wick in there
that I bet is hard as a rock. I would try and either get wick out or try & soak it with carb. cleaner. Or pick it out with a needle, then oil, then stick a ball of cotton in and soak cotton with oil. Most likely never been oiled since day 1.... |
