some time ago I saw a 36 panel truck which had a five speed od trans in it and still had the closed drive shaft, anyone know how you do that? I am considering doing the same. I know you can do that with a s-10 trans but you have convert to open drive and I would rather not do that if I don't have to.

You can do it with a T5. There was a detailed thread on the setup, an adapter to the closed driveshaft is used in place of the normal tail cone piece.

T5s were used in S10 pickups, Camaros, Mustangs, and other cars/trucks. Anything can be made to work with anything if you spend enough time and money!
