Bad valve

Hi, so she back fired. Drove the Coupe for about twenty minutes with no problems. Stopped for gas when I started her up the engines began knocking. Sounds like a valve. Any ideas as to what has happened. If it is say a Brocken spring on a valve can I replace it without yanking the engine? Thanks

Do a compression check.
If you had valve seats installed, that would be my first guess as to the problem.

Possible carbon broke loose and on top of the piston?
Is engine misfiring?

Hi Gino,

Absolutely no doubt about it ..... that any definite, engine internal knocking translates into immediate dismantling to investigate where the sound is originating.

This is not like the song your engine is singing:

"You keep a knocking but you can't come in."

Get your wrenches.

If you want more than guesses you're going to have to do some troubleshooting and get the info back to those who can give you advice. Check compression, pull off valve cover and look it over, try to define noise and location as best you can. Short individual plugs and note any change in sound, etc.

The short answer to your question is, NO, you dont have to tear the whole motor down to change a valve spring. I hope that is indeed your only problem. Good Luck

answer to your question about pulling the engine. valve service can be done through the side inspection cover under the intake and ex ports. I made a spring compressor by welding two old wrenches together and grinding the 1/2 in open end to sharp wedge to get into the spring and use a intake stud and wrap wire from stud to wrench to act as pivot. you have to be careful I took a patch of skin off my thump tip. when the spring retainer slipped off the wrench when I was placing the keeper.
