Default Carb rebuild choke mechanism confusion

I'm rebuilding the Holley 94 for an 81A and I've confused myself around the choke control circuit.

There is a spring on the choke shaft of which one end was loose so it wasn't doing anything. I bent the end of it slightly so it was gently turning the choke towards closed.

The spring detent in the choke control mechanism holds the choke open in normal running position (picture 1) but now when I close the choke (picture 2) the choke shaft turns itself perpendicular to the control mechanism and it wont open again.

What have I got wrong?

Thanks in advance.
David
