Carb rebuild choke mechanism confusion

2 Attachment(s)
I'm rebuilding the Holley 94 for an 81A and I've confused myself around the choke control circuit.

There is a spring on the choke shaft of which one end was loose so it wasn't doing anything. I bent the end of it slightly so it was gently turning the choke towards closed.

The spring detent in the choke control mechanism holds the choke open in normal running position (picture 1) but now when I close the choke (picture 2) the choke shaft turns itself perpendicular to the control mechanism and it wont open again.

What have I got wrong?

Thanks in advance.
David

Sometimes the Shaft tang will be slightly bent,?or have a burr on it. They always seem to take a liile more pressure to open than close as well.

Thanks Ralph, there is quite a deep indent worn in the control rod. Its quite visible in the first photo. Do you just file this out? I take it the spring is meant to hold the choke towards the closed position?
Thanks
David

If you file it more it won´t make the choke come all the way to open position.
You can bend the lever on the chokeaxle a bit for adjustment but there is a limited amount available.

It looks right. They can feel a little tight to open, but in reality, the action of the engine sucking air past the flap will assist it to open.

Thanks Mart - I'll look for a replacement and flatheadmurre, you are quite right. i will see if I can fill the notch in the meantime. Thank you very much for the advice.

The top casting shown is not for the 94 for the 81A engine it is later. The original top, for the 91-99 does not have the vent tube in the center of the venture or an extra vent hole in the casting.

Yes, the spring on the choke shaft is supposed to push the choke towards the closed position. Looks correct to me.
