I welded mine up about 25 years ago for my 1929 Standard Coupe, then I had them turned down to what they were originally...no problems as of yet.

Do a search on "Bent Front Axle", or "Straightening Front Axle" and you should come up with a thread where Kevin shows 4 pins stuck in the front axle to check for bending.

Another easy quick check is that if you have everything off your axle it should lay flat on a flat surface. Its not uncommon for them to be bent from the spring perch outward. Mine was - some time with a 20 ton press fixed it and now my car drives beautifully and tracks straight with no wobble.
