I hope to start wiring my town sedan for the rear inside tight (Over the rear window) Is it ok to use the vinyl insulated wire. Yeah I know, "it's your car, use whatever you want!" I'm thinking of longevity. The braided cotton seems so fragile in comparison, And it seems like a huge job to fix it if it cracks or frays. Once it's in, I don't want to be taking it out, ever! What do you think? 100% no no? or it's OK to bend the restoration rules here?

No one will see it so use any AMERICAN made vinyl covered wire of proper gauge.
The foreign made stuff is oats that have been through the horse. Personally I use teflon covered aircraft wire for all wiring. It won't melt or burn in case someone puts too big of a fuse in the circuit and you have trouble. The switch or the unit itself will burn and you can get at that a lot easier with a fire extinguisher. |

My understanding as well.

Aircraft and car wire are the same if made in the usa. But, if you want aircraft then go near any airport where they fix aircraft. Usually one of the larger ones and tell then what you need.

Terry,
If you want "FOREVER" wire, run it through a long vacuum hose for protection. Bill W.

Here's another place that has Teflon covered aircraft wire, both new and surplus.
The surplus is pretty cheap. http://www.dexknows.com/business_pro...lty_co-b309040 |

12 gauge is overkill as far as the size needed for the third brake light.
I bought elevator wiring from the recycling yard about 10 years ago. It's quality wiring and very long and flexible. I don't know if the elevator was being torn down, or if the wiring just needs to be replaced every so often due to a law. |

Nope, Not at the time. Just a little thought about it and I realised that 12 ga was a little heavy for a 3W light. Another case of typing it out before engaging brain! And Mitch... Got me all confused with that stuff about space shuttle wire! And Bill had me splicing and taping 12" sections.... Gollleee! A person can't think with all that going on. Time to feed the Gerbil!
