Re: Upgrading to a different carb/intake?

Nice engine; it just needs more carburetors:D (the "look", you know). Unfortunately, that will require a distributor change. I prefer vintage "flattop" Mallory's".

BTW "Sunnybob", do you by chance...

Re: 40 Sedan Deluxe Speaker install - No studs?

Just throwing this out. Perhaps fabricate some brackets to mount the speaker on the radio body in approximately the stock location? I know this depends on a lot of things, but since later components...

Re: Upgrading to a different carb/intake?

As I first said, "I have no idea". My knowledge of the detail on the French Fords is close to zero. I just wanted to raise a warning about the standard Ford "Load-A-Matic" system being an odd beast....

Re: chevy dizzy for flatheads

Now that you have Charlie's contact information, I think he would probably be the best one to answer this. He may also be able to supply the proper core.

Re: Hirsch Auto Auction Sale

I will turn 82 next month with arthritis so bad I can no longer do the lathe work that is the main part of making these. I have a partner in this that may or may not continue on with this. The guy is...

Re: Upgrading to a different carb/intake?

Boy, I have no idea. Does the French distributor work on the "Load-A-Matic" principle? If so, the carb from your link most likely won't work right. All in all, I think it's a bad idea. The original...

Re: Edelbrock 1107 4 barrel intake for 8ba

Did you try an original Ford/Merc tube? We don't even know if the manifold is too big or the tube is too small. (Knowing Speedway, I'd bet on the tube being wrong.) If you have a dial calipers,...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

"Relief" is kind of a odd word here. Generally, any time you remove material from the combustion chamber, you are "relieving" it. Where the misunderstanding comes in is that "relieving" has a special...

Re: Hirsch Auto Auction Sale

If you don't believe the marketplace is changing, consider this : at the Mecum Auction in Indianapolis this week, I saw two "station wagons" sell to the highest bidder. The first was a nice lookin'...

Re: Hirsch Auto Auction Sale

I think the market is drying up. I sold over 500 of my "Trash Can" condensers over a 7 year period. It was not a big volume, but steady. Then the demand just stopped about a year and a half ago. I...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

A couple of things. First, I never use radical high lift cams (usually just a "MAX-1") and have never found a problem with clearance over the valves. I do put a large foil ball on each valve head on...

Re: 1940 Ford Zenith Radio

In my experience, tubes are usually good if the radio appears to be clean and not molested. That's good because they can be hard to find and relatively expensive. Capacitors are usually bad and easy...

Re: 97 carb on a 51 8ba

While the 97 does flow a bit more (162 cfm vs 155 cfm) due to slightly larger venturi's, more improvement could be had by using a later "Y-Block" Holley (185 cfm) that is still compatible with the...

Re: 97 carb on a 51 8ba

Nope; never saw the point of it. I remember that my older brother did it on our '51 Fordor back in the fifties and replaced it within a week.

One caveat : I have heard that back then "Western...

Re: Automotive switch ratings?

I don't think current type matters, since it's not given in the rating. "Watts is watts", so it shouldn't be relevant. There may be some esoteric difference with the way the contacts handle the...

Re: Automotive switch ratings?

Watts (VoltsXAmps) is a rating of total power, which would determine if the switch could handle the load.

So we have :

12X6=72 Watts required

6X125V=750 Watts
3X250V=750 Watts...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

Yep, Barney Navarro was also an advocate of "pop-up" pistons in flatheads.

Re: Odd Frame Repair?

I had a '36 Coupe that had a cracked front crossmember that was similar to that. I replaced the entire crossmember with a new one from "Precision Coachworks" of Billerica, MA (unfortunately they are...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

It sounds to me like you need some different heads. I've never had a problem of too little quench. It may be because I've always had access to "virgin" heads. Do you know the history of the heads you...

Re: 276 stroker from 35 years of parts

I seriously doubt that you could hit the head with a piston with anywhere near the force of a power stroke no matter how fast and hard you turned it over.

Re: '46 Coupe 59AB Starter

IIRC, new brushes are almost an inch long. I have seen starters that worked with the brushes worn down to almost nothing. New brushes should solve this problem. While you're at it, replace the...

Re: What Temperature Sending Unit do I need?

Most Ford V8's have both a single post and a double post unit. The single post unit is in the passenger side head, and is the actual sending unit. The two post unit goes into the left head, and is...

Re: 1107 4 barrel intake for a 51 mercury

Please be aware that the above pictures show a modern PCV valve plumbed into an 8BA style intake manifold. Although such setups usually work better than the original road draft tube systems, they are...

Re: High RPM problem, thoughts?

Re-pop carbs are usually a big problem. Try to find out what you have before you do much else. You probably need new carburetors.:(
