39 transmision build

I am putting together a 39 box with standard gears that are up through 1948. The 1/4 inch pin that keeps the gear shift lever ball oriented is really sloppy. What is the best way to fix that. In Vern Tardel trans book it says weld it up and remachine. Is that the only option out there. How about an oversize pin.

I've used the plain end of a 7mm drill before now. Drill the hole and file the slot then use the end of the drill as the pin.

Mart.

17/64 is a bit smaller than 7mm and is a perfect fit. Would need to file just a bit out of the slot

Just going through a rebuild myself. I found VanPelts book more detailed then Tardels for the rebuild. I would recommend it.

VanPelt is currently doing a series of post/threads on a rebuild here on the Barn. It is a different transmission (over-drive), but there might be some good information useful on your build.

I’ve used a HARD drill to replace worn pin. Never have to worry about it wearing out . A little tough to cut to size, was only problem

When you use a hard drill, the shifter slot will wear instead of the pin which is easily replaceable. Same for hardened rear axle keys which I learned the hard way. But we may not drive (hard) enough for the stuff to wear out.

Without drilling it is already 17/64. I would need to file the slot in the shift lever ball slot to match it.

Re: 39 transmision build

I was rummaging around in some misc parts and found a better shifting tower. An F size letter drill (.257) is pretty good fit. Fits pretty good in the slot on shift lever. Talked to Van Pelt and he said use a soft pin.
