Default Primer on Motor

Do you need to primer the motor before painting? If so what color is used light gray, dark gray, black or red?

I don't use primer for the engine.
Ford engine green is the proper colour. Available from all the vendors.
Good Luck. Jeff

I use one coat of rustoleum red rusty metal primer before two coats of my special mix of Ford engine green.

no primer, the engine paints of today go right over bare metal. just do NOT use any water base.

When it comes to heat transfer, less paint is better.

redmodelt's statement also applies to painting Model A radiators.

I only used primer on an engine one time, many many years ago. When the engine warmed up, the paint peeled. Never again! Only use paint that is intended for painting engines and apply it directly to clean bare metal. It is heat resistant. Most primers are not heat resistant.

I used a bio-degradable de-greaser, got the engine nice and clean, and painted the engine, no primer, has not peeled in the three years since.
I painted the intake manifold white, because I wanted to, there, answered your question.
