Disaster waiting to happen
I took my carb off today to send to Charlie NY for a rebuild, I removed the top to dump out the gas and this is what I saw.

Re: Disaster waiting to happen
Good thing that little screw had a big enough head to not take a ride through the tail pipe!

Re: Disaster waiting to happen
Oops. That is fortunate.
I sucked a red shop rag through a Robert Yates engine on the dyno one time..... at about 9 grand or so. It shot out the exhaust and landed in the corner where it smoldered for a couple of seconds and burst into flames. There were 2 expensive bent valves as part of that high speed trip. |

Re: Disaster waiting to happen
Notice the open screw hole near the bottom right?

Re: Disaster waiting to happen
You ARE lucky! I had one of those small brass screws that hold the butterfly to the shaft get loose and made lots of bad noises and put thread marks on top of a Ross piston (but not the underside of the head). Only cost me a head gasket. I thought a rod had let go.

Re: Disaster waiting to happen
Wow, used up all your luck for today, be careful crossing streets!!
Probably lots of red-rag stories on this forum. Mine was leaving a wood block that holds the cam chain tensioner of a Datsun 240Z 6 cyl. After adjusting the cam timing, I closed it up and left the block in there. The cam chain ate up the wood and stuffed chips into the groove in the cam sprocket. The groove filled up and pushed the chain out of engagement and slipped the cam out time and bent ALL the valves.

Re: Disaster waiting to happen
Lucky catch. I would almost guess you had a problem with the way the engine idled, since that screw is for the clamp for the main nozzle, that also carries fuel to the idle system for one side.

Re: Disaster waiting to happen
Lost a real nice engine a year or so back when the exact same screw broke a piston. ot a new used piston from Walt and put the engine back to gether. someone put a heli coil in a blind hole head bolt and drilled the hole too deep. When I went to fix it it broke into the exhaust port. sad day. Glad you got it .

Re: Disaster waiting to happen
Maybe the carb designers purposely specified large enough washers so a loose screw could not fall through?
