Default Rear window seals 1940 Ford coupe

Where do you guys get GOOD fitting rear window seals? Drakes are total crap. Carpenters may even be worse.
It's pretty obvious neither of these places ever actually tried to use their own seals.

Guys I bought from C&G and they fit perfect. I used a little dishwasher soap in a water spray bottle and had my Wife outside pulling on the thin rope and they popped right in. No probs and the size was correct.

I agree that the Carpenter cpe rear seals are really poor fitting, but the two sets of Drake's rear cpe seals that I have recently installed fit perfectly.

While you guys are whining about who makes the better seal remember, on this style seal it is important to have the glass cut correctly, if you glass is cut to small or too big it will distort the seal fit and you will have an issue. So before you throw stones make sure that your glass is correct.

I put a Drake seal in my 41 pickup and it fit great. Also have Drake seals in my 40 coupe and they also fit great. Dick Spadaro is right, it's the correct dimension of the glass that makes the seal fit correctly.

Dick, This ain't my first rodeo.
The seals from Carpenter are obviously a good 1 1/2" too long. Drakes, at least an inch.
Throwing stones? I think not. Telling it like it is? Yep...
By the way, my glass (from Sanders) matches (exactly)the template that was provided with both the Drake and Carpenter seals. Next theory please?

Correct! when I received my Drake rear window seals they came with a glass template, I checked it with my glass and it matched the template perfectly, so I proceeded to instal the new rubber with a little dish soap and it fit perfect. Something else that could factor into these seals not fitting so great is some previously poor body work done to repair rust,etc..
I'm currently restoring a 47 Cadillac at the shop and we are using Steele Rubber products, they are really high quality looking rubber pieces.
Soft seal is another company I have used in the past and had good luck with. not sure if they offer rubber for the 40 though.

Poor body work? Not on my cars. Nope, just bad seals. Period.

I thought of that Ken. I don't have a lot of experience with sedans but aren't the windows smaller than a coupe?

You may be correct. I'm working today but I have a sedan and a coupe and will measure them in the morning.

The sedan uses a a larger seal. I also used Drake seals in my 37 coupe and they fit perfect in that car also.

I wasn't saying You had bad body work, just stating that it could be a problem, Anyway, If your cars consistently score 998 out of 999 You should be telling us where to buy good rubber!

We installed a set of Carpenters rear window rubber seals two years ago on a 1940 Deluxe coupe. Perfect fit. Also we installed a set of rear window seals on a 1940 2-door sedan, perfect fit. I bought a set of rear window rubbers for the 1939 Ford coupe we are presenly restoring. I will report on the fit of these. I have been buying rubber items from Carpenter for many years with no fit problems. When installing the seals, I am very cautious to prevent stretching the rubber. Good luck with yours! Tom

Hey Tom, Like you, I installed a set of Carp's about a year ago. They were great. A set of Drakes, about three years ago... good fit.
I am willing to bet "quailty control" has become an oxymoron.

Mike Kubarth! You could possibly be right on about a change in quality from some of these suppliers. In fact I bought a set of door window "whiskers" from Carpenter while I was in his store picking up the rubber seals. The window item was manufactured by Vintique! I am not happy to see that, and if I have trouble installing them, they will be returned for credit! We see too much "farming out" by some old Ford parts outlets. Tom

Hi Tom, I think you'll find the side window kit decent. You will need to shape them a bit to fit your window frames which is easy to do. Don't expect them to last more than a few years without the felt coming loose from the stiff backing.
I purchase the "raw materials" through Lebaron-Bonney and make my own. So far at least, the product quality has been good.
