Default Cars Stolen…be on the lookout.

Cars Stolen…be on the lookout.

An Oakland storage building was broken into and 4 cars were stolen and 2 were damaged. This could have happened as long ago as Mar, 2022. One car, '92 Mustang LX Convertible was abandoned/towed to towing facility and will be retrieved, but the other 4 are still missing.

Please be on the lookout for the following vehicles and let me know if you see anything. These vehicles could either be sold outright via the web, or parts might begin showing up.

MISSING CARS (with license plate # but plate most likely already removed):
1. 1939 FORD DELUXE 2D SEDAN; BLACK; 2TSB760

2. 1940 MERCURY SEDAN COUPE; GREEN; 005LEW

3. 1947 MERCURY 4D SEDAN; BLACK; 1LEW702

4. 1982 MERCURY CAPRI 2D; GREY; 1FAD208

On the rare occasions that a collector car has been stolen here, the general consensus is that they will end up being rebirthed as hot rods. I hope that is not the fate of your cars. Good luck.

katy, sedan coupe is Ford's term for what's also known as a "club coupe" (has the rear seat).

We used to say something like that about VW beetles. It went: Beetle> Baja Bug> Dune Buggy and then finally into a Sand Rail. A step or two might be skipped depending on the amount of damage to the vehicle.

An apple air tag, or a Galaxy air tag.....will these track a stolen car? I have heard yes, and I have heard no.

Not in isolation, but if the AirTag comes near any iPhone, it will report its whereabouts to the cloud via the phone.

With no update since May of 2022 indicating otherwise, I assume that 3 of the cars were not found. I adopted the AirTag suggestion for my car as a low-cost alternative to LoJack, but have to remember to replace it before the battery is exhausted.

I bought an airtag a couple years ago to test as a vehicle tracking system. So far it has worked very well. I plan to purchase them for my vintage vehicles soon.

A couple of tips for anyone thinking of doing this. Name the tag something normal. For example "My Backpack". So if thieves are alerted to it's presence they will look for a backpack, not a tag actually left with the car itself. Also place the airtag where it is very hard to find/get to. Like you have to disassemble parts of the interior to even get to it.

Read an article a few weeks back about airtag. A guy had one on his MC and it was stolen. He found the garage the bike was in and popo would not get involved because he had no proof who took it.

You definitely want to get your insurance company involved as well. They seem to have power to make the police act that normal citizens do not.

The Air Tag will inform you when the battery gets low.

At times, my Air Tags can be a nuance, I am forever getting messages on my iPhone that my "Truck was left behind" then proceeds to let me know at what address it was last "seen".

I can see it myself, sitting out on the street in front of my house.

I have a streetrod too. As a good-guy member they had an article in their magazine about May 2023. They were discussing car theft, and receveries. I ended up with a thing I can magnetially attach to which ever car I am driving. It loaded an app on my phone, and whenever the car is in motion it shows a map and address of where the car is. The little magmentic hockey puck was about $50, and the subscription is about $60 per 1/2 yr. I know longer need to worry about being carjacked driving my convertible. I don't want an insurance check - I WANT MY CAR!

Now that State Farm seems to have control over Hagerty I need peace of mind.

Technically 15%. But they got seats on the board of directors, and you can tell things have changed. For example, I call every few years and up some of my cars values. Usually a short phone call. In January it was a 20 minute Q&A session...

Hagerty went public.

State Farm is still in that mindset of; 1) We need to make all the money we can no matter how we do it. 2) We are still dealing with clients that are out to cheat us. They don't understand that the true collector clientel really never wants to make a claim.

You can tell.....

Guy- PUT AN AIR TAG IN ANY VEHICLE YOU CARE ABOUT!! AND YOUR TRAILER. If you don't have an i phone there are other inexpensive tracking devices out there. Don't wait until something happens. OPD is so busy with shootings and such, they simply can't handle the workload. The neighbor has his trucks stolen and he does not even bother calling 911 anymore. He just goes and takes his truck back with a few of his guys. To the OP- post pictures and info about your cars on the HAMB- losts of eyes over there. OOPs- just was this is an old posting- get your air tags anyway!!!!

You can mark this address as 'private' and then you will not get notified if you leave things behind at that address...

A highway patrol friend of mine also says if you have an enclosed trailer put large numbers
or other identifying markings on top of the trailer. They can be spotted from the air that way and the thieves never look on top of the roof.

As a side note I had the license plate stolen from my boat trailer. DMV told me I needed to notify the highway patrol of the theft. When I went to the highway patrol I asked why I had to report it as I have had plates stolen before with no reporting required.
They said boat trailer plates are being stolen as the trailers sit there for months with nobody noticing. They end up on stolen enclosed trailers and they find them up in remote areas as meth labs.
noticing

Speaking of stolen cars, can I change the subject to Easy Passes? In Pa. if an Easy Pass is in a stolen car the turnpike commission can red flag that pass and track it's use. The cop involved with my wife's stolen car didn't know or believe that. But my own research with the commission said it is easy for them to do it. It only takes a form filled out by the cop to initiate. I HATE thieves.

Does anybody have any experience tracking a car in a shipping container with an AirTag?

I would think that the metal walls of the container might interfere or even block the tracker from sending a signal outside the container.

.....any thoughts?
