1937 Ford carburetor
I have a 1937 Ford 85 hp with a Stromberg 48 carburetor which someone added along with what I am assuming is not original, a 1/2" carb to intake spacer with vacuum port. Since I do not need the vacuum port does anyone know if I can just remove the spacer or is it needed?

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
Does your '37 have a two-speed rear-end aka a Columbia Overdrive? If not, removing the spacer will not cause a problem....

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
the mounting studs will be long but they can also be changed. Many of the hardware stores carry the proper stud.

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
No two speed rear end. I have also noticed that some people place an extra tall spacer under the carb, is that for keeping the carb cool?

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
The original carburetor for a 85 hp '37 was a 97, not a 48.

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
Was there originally any spacer between the carb and the intake or just the gasket?

That may have been for a Marvel Mystery Oiler or Ampco oiler.

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
Could the spacer be a left over part of a Southwind Gas Heater set up?

I pulled the carb, so I got a pic of the spacer.

Certainly looks like a southwind vacuum plate.

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
Looks about same size pipe as the Columbia OD needs.
I need one. |

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
After the war, Ford used this location for the vacuum for the wipers. I think the wiper works better getting vacuum at this location instead of between two intake ports.

Re: 1937 Ford carburetor
Note that the Southwind heater vacuum plate is different than the one used with Columbia overdrive as well as the pipe size required for the Columbia is larger.
