I just found this-need advice!
This truck is going to be in an estate auction close to me soon. They have it advertised as a 1930. Obviously, from the pics provided-it appears to be a 28 or 29. Here is all I know- (which isn't much) They got it running. It's supposed to have a clear title. Assuming the undercarriage is good and everything else is just "driver quality"-what is a rough ballpark figure on what it's worth? I have not personally seen the truck, I just found out about it yesterday. I read somewhere here on the forum that very early 30's looked alot like 29's but the gas caps are different. I know this isn't much to go on, but as I said I just found out about it and the auction is Wed. 6/17/15. Any input would be apppreciated. Thanks a million! Smitty

Make sure you can fit in it comfortably. I wish I had road tested my 29 Roadster pickup first. It is The most uncomfortable vehicle I have ever been in ! Wayne

I just noticed something in the pics. It has an exterior door handle on the left, but none on the right. Is that correct?

Re: I just found this-need advice!
I would need to correct a lot of things if I owned it, but I'd say if it's worth 8K it will sell for 16K at an estate auction.
Is that a camera trick, or are the rear fenders different? |

It appears to have 21" wheels also. The 30's (even the early ones) had 19" wheels.

Re: I just found this-need advice!
28-29 gas cap was a threaded cap. The early 1930 had a quarter twist cap. Hard to tell in the pic's, but it looks like a threaded cap. Rod

Re: I just found this-need advice!
On a quick look:
Not Correct: top seat cushions windshield posts driver door and pass. door should match...these don't rear fenders look unmatched oil filler tube is strange are those washers under the head bolts? if so, that is wrong looks to be some oil being splashed around the engine compartment. This vehicle has all the earmarks of a thrown together car built from parts. Please take a knowledgeable Model A guy with you to examine the car before committing to any money changing hands. |

Re: I just found this-need advice!
I would go $10,000 if a roadster pickup was in my tea leaves. Yes, it has issues, but don't we all, and $10 k would give a very good value.

Re: I just found this-need advice!
It is not a 30 for all the reasons given, cowl, radiator, tank, wheels, etc.
10k and if it's a style you really like and plan to keep it for many years, 15k.

Re: I just found this-need advice!
Thanks guys, I really appreciate your input. I talked with the auctioneer yesterday afternoon. He told me that he has yet to see the title and he listed it as a 30 as that is what the owner's widow told him. I talked with him in great length about the legal stuff-transferring title(if there is one)and other things. I've known this particular auctioneer for several years. He graduated highschool with my Wife. He was quite honest in his description of the truck and admitted he is by no means a Model A expert.
The auction is tomorrow and I plan on attending. I will update everyone Thur. on what it sold for and if it followed me home. Thanks again, Smitty |

Bill, Truer words were never spoken ..... If you love projects, go for it. At 8k you can flip it the next day but you won't have the truck as you really want it. Re: I just found this-need advice!
Smittykid, PLEASE find a knowledgeable Model A Guy for advise in PA or SC, wherever you wish to register it regarding the possible lack of a Title and the hoops you MIGHT have to jump through if it is sold without a believable title. The description of it being a 1930 with all appearances pointing to it being a 1928 or 1929 MIGHT be a hornet's nest at the DMV.

Re: I just found this-need advice!
this is definitely not a 30, it is a 28-29. Check the title. if it checks out I would think that up to 8 grand would be as high as I would go. It would have to start and drive for that price. It's a nice little pick-up and if you found out a little more about it, the thing could be worth much more. My Dad has an early 28 with matching numbers and some very rare parts, this could be something like that you just couldn't tell without being there to look at it.

Re: I just found this-need advice!
Auction update: The truck sold for $7,750. I hung right in there till $7,000 then got cold feet. It is titled a 30. I asked the widow about that & she just said it was titled a 30 when her husband bought it.
The truck had a lot of things cobbled up on it. The fenders were steel, but had a lot of putty in them. They did get it running and moved it back & forth a couple of times. The overall condition was not great. Lots of holes drilled where they shouldn't be. I probably could have hung in there for a little longer, as the guy that wound up with it kept out bidding me and another guy fairly quickly. But as I said, I got cold feet. The auction wasn't a total bust for me. I did get a "FORD" open end wrench for $4.00. |

Maybe not cold feet, maybe common sense prevailed ! It's often been said that you should let your brain over rule your heart at an auction ! Wayne

Thanks for the update. You'll probably see it on the local Craigslist for 12K pretty soon.

Re: I just found this-need advice!
Don't despair Smitty, keep looking and and by all means don't be in a rush, I took a pass on many a car, some I wanted really, really bad.
Have an idea of what you want, what you are willing to pay, and keep looking, keep searching, and wait for it, and it will come. Found mine, searched for almost a year, been sitting/hiding in a garage for 54 years, paid $3500, had it running/driving in less than 40 days and another $2500. Stay the course and never give up. Remember...The boys at the Barn got your back.

Hey - its only about a 3/4 ton over the limits! Of course, those limits are greatly affected by the marketing pen!! Round here they do that often........

Re: I just found this-need advice!
We had to load it backwards to get it out of the funky garage set-up, once we got it to the top of the hill (pictured) my son and I turned it around, and yep, towed it from Arlington Texas to Shawnee Oklahoma with the jeep, ate a little more gas but the jeep pulled it no problem.

Re: I just found this-need advice!
Here you go.
Does this look better? Tell you one thing, it was no easy task hand pushing that car on and off that trailer to get it turned around with just my son and I. And that fat man in the 2nd pic, yep...thats me.

Re: I just found this-need advice!
Smitty, let me tell you from experience. If the trained eye(s) can pick up issues from the pictures, and you can see issues when you get there, MULTIPLY those issues by 10 and that might be close to the things you have to fix.
When a person cobbles something up, they usually cobble up the inside of stuff too. Life is short as someone said, but the truck you deserve is out there. Just keep on looking. I did and after three years, I found what I wanted for what I wanted to pay. It was a blessing from God for being patient. Still, there are lots of things for me to fix. Thanks for keeping us posted on how it turned out. JackD |

I think Hardtimes and others, have hit the nail on the head.
Sometimes, maybe many times, things just don't feel right and perhaps, common sense sneaks in. I'm sure you made the right move, Smitty |

Re: I just found this-need advice!
Early 1930 trucks were made from leftover 1929 bodies, so the year may be correct.
