My first Model A, many years ago was a 1929 special coupe. It had an accessory gas cap that had two ears on top. I wish I still owned it or at least had taken pictures of it. Have any of you guys ever seen one?
Regards, Neil |

Something similar to the 4-eared one in this current eBay link? DD

Sure it wasn't a Chrysler cap with wings? Bob

Looks like a cap for bulk oil or fuel.

It wouldn't be too hard to make one with a TIG welder and a lathe.
Getting a little creative you could make it look like Mickey Mouse or if you preferred bigger ears, Dumbo. |

I also thought it looked like a vintage bulk oil or bulk Varsol or kerosene container. Wayne

Truth be known, you could do some selective grinding, rounding-off and pampering and end-up with a nice-looking, polished cap out of that dumpy looking old piece. DD

I think these were originally Buick gas caps in the late teens thru early 1920's - I have one with an accessory hood ornament somewhere at home - I'll post pictures tomorrow if you need.

Hello Neil- If you go to my web site, olympic-speedsters.com , and watch the pics scroll across on my home page, there is a pic of a red and white speedster that I designed and built that has a gas cap on the rear that I designed and had a couple dozen (12 ea. brass & aluminum) cast up, which I then dressed and polished and internally threaded for '29 Ford gas tank neck. You can just see the top of it, and I can't get any more pics of it at this time. If you want a better pic, I will have to get someone who knows how to do the pic thing on my computer.

The saddle tanks on our International R-190 dump trucks from the 50's and 60's had caps real similar if not identical to the cap from V8COOPMAN's ebay link they were bronze also.

Which way was she running the last time you saw her...
But I gotta say Coop, I prefer your alternate mode of transportation shown in your Avatar. What is that an old Piper Twin and do you still have it? |

I have a brass cap with two rounded "ears" on it, a small vent hole in the middle indicates use as a gas cap, and I have tried it on my 1929 Phaeton and it screws into place fine. If it once was plated the plating is gone, and what shows is brass with worn out black paint. If anyone is interested it is available. Send me a PM or eMail [email protected].

Here is a picture of the one I think you were looking for - "mickey-ears" - and I believe was an early Buick gas cap that just happened to fit the A radiator and became such...
I'm sure I picked this up for under $5 at some flea, but if you really want one there is one on e-bay - search for "vintage gas cap radiator ornament 1910" and it should top the list. I have no interest or knowledge of the seller of this item - just tripped across it. |

I hope you were the one who bought that cap on e-bay - it ended sometime yesterday.
