Default What is this collar for?

I can't figure out what the purpose of this collar on the starter rod is? Is it some sort of stop? Has a allen head set screw. Haven't seen it on other cars.

Thanks... And Merry Christmas to All...

It looks like the h2o pump collar? Ditch it.

Is there a hole drilled to accommodate the set screw through to the starter rod shaft? If so perhaps the shaft is not threaded, and it was a farmers fix to retain the starter rod.

Or "to facilitate the next garage fire"

It looks smaller than a water pump shaft collar. Maybe they jist thought it looked purty .

It's a starter rod vibration damper.

That is a very rare accessory item for model A's.
It is a cardinal grammeter and it is used to bleed off the excess inverse reactive current from the starter.

No the starter rod is threaded. In fact I was removing the starter rod t replace the starter rod grommet when I noticed it. The set screw is just holding it in place.

I guess it could be any of the above, haha. So basically I don't need it... Another mystery solved.

If it is it doesn't work. The starter rod was rattling because the grommet was MIA.

Maybe it adds weight to the starter rod so his wife did not have to push so hard to get it started.

How about maybe the rod would unscrew so the person put that on to keep it from unscrewing.

Looks like this guy has lots ideas. Look at the double nuts on the starter cable. When things get just right, I think it could make a nice fire when that collar hits that big nut.

I bet the rest of the cars has some nice improvements also.

I wonder if the collar was put there to make it easier starting/turn-over the motor from inside the engine compartment. You could wrap your fingers around the collar a lot easier than just the rod itself.

Just thinking! (Which sometimes can be dangerous.)

I think it's part of that Sparky Start setup. The rig that kicks the starter over when you retard the spark all the way.It ties into the spark rod,and has a bellcrank that pivots onto that collar to push the rod down.It looks like the rest of the setup has been removed, and hopefully thrown away.

Y Blockhead. That part is part of the up start kit sold by the vendors. Look at Snyder's part # A11470-F.

Had one on my car for a while.

Dick - Looks like that is it.

At least I guessed it had something to do with starting. (Although, being on the starter rod, it wasn't much of a guess.)

Whoa! 72 bucks?? Wish I had the rest of it. I could sell it on e-pay.
Looking at the installation instructions that answers another question. The holder/bolt is still in place also.

Now that that is solved I'm off to my next project... Need to change my Tail Light Fluid, don't know when it was done last. I may have to post some questions about that...

Maybe an optical illusion but it looks close to nut securing battery cable. Don't get a ring between the two or it will be a painful way to lose a finger! OUCH

Good reason not to wear jewelry while working on a car. Wasn't really that close but both the collar and double nut have been removed now.

While taking electronics courses in the Army, no one was allowed to wear watches or rings.

A friend of mine drove a cement truck, and just a month before he retired, he was climbing down the ladder when his wedding ring caught on something and tore his finger right off.

You can use the lower priced Blinker Fluid instead of Tail light fluid. The additives needed for proper flash synchronization will work well with the non flash tail light.

Blinker Fluid

Years ago working for my Dad in his garage. I was working under the dash with my wedding ring on. It hit a hot wire and ground, I think the ammeter. I have never wore it since. Man that ring got hot, left a nice burn ring around my finger. Rings and working on cars or machines is not good.
