Starter Question

In trying to start my engine I ran into this situation: engine turned over but would start. Put the hand crank in to reset and check the timing but the engine would not turn. Removed the starter and saw no damage to the bendix or the ring gear. Put the hand crank in and the engine turned. Installed the starter and was able to turn the engine with the hand crank. Can anybody give me some ideas with this problem. Thanks Peter

clean the bendix helix and check the starter switch, and the auxilary fuse block, the fuse block is poorly made.

Fuse should have nothing to do with the starter as it is AFTER the starter electrically.
Is there a chance your car was in gear when it would not turn over by crank?
Sometimes I miss these things while involved in a repair.

Ditto on being in gear, been there...done that.
Sometimes I forget to turn the gas on too.

Your bendix gear hung up on the flywheel ring gear.

Thanks, bruce. It would still be a good idea to check the fuse assembly when you disturb the starter switch. I eliminated mine.

When this happens, put the car in gear and rock it back and forth. This will usually un-stick the bendix.

If you drive an old Ford long enough this will happen. Just a very minor inconvenience. This problem may not occur again for years.

If it keeps happening on a regular bases, remove the starter and inspect the bendix and the flywheel ring gear.
