Default how to tighten upper plate

Is there a way to tighten the fit of the upper plate in the distributor housing?
if I push mine side to side it changes the point gap. I don't know if this makes a difference, but I would like a better fit. It seems that I read something about this.

The spring should hold the plate up. There are 3 ears on the plate that ride in the housing, put each one into a vice and bent part of each ear down slightly. This will tighten up the plate.

The plate centers on the housing casting which wears after time. I have thought about donig some lathe work to make a bushing to replace the worn casting. Never went by the thought stage since I have a large collection of original housings.
