Default engine noise

Trying to figure out a lower end engine noise. if I short out the number three spark plug the knock goes away engine sounds good and solid. engine stays noisy when shorting out any other plug....What is this telling me? I leaning toward rod bearing and I in the right ball park?
thanks for any thoughts.

Thats how we did it back in the day. Drop the pan an do some (adjusting) of the shims. Make sure the bearing is in good condition first. They now use plastic gauge to check the fit, but back then we used a small machinest hammer and checked the side to side movement. Sounds shade tree, but it worked very well and we quited quiet a few engines that gave miles of service. Iceman
