Up until today I didn't realize the E28 had a shorted choke rod and a lower location for the bracket on the gas tank. E28 on top is from my early 28 open cab pickup.

My 9-27-28 also has the teardrop choke rod and the mounting bracket under the gas tank forward of later choke rods.

Can someone concur with another observation?

None of the instrument panels that fit my 29 roadster will fit my E28 gas tank. E28 is a special instrument panel?

My AR has the same short GAV rod. Also have the bracket that is forward of the later models.

The early panel is different only that it does not have a clipped or flat top at the 12 o'clock position.

May I add, Or counter sunk holes on the bottom two screw holes..

I measured the width of both the E28 and 29 and there is a difference in where the bottom 2 screws attach by about and 1/8 of an inch.

It would be nice if someone else with an E28 would measure the distance between the two bottoms screws! My 29 screws are3 1/4 inches center to center.

Here is from an earlier post that I did not get an answer from someone`!

"I got my micrometer out and measured the distance between the screw holes and low and behold, on the E28 the bottom holes are about 1/8 inch farther apart, just enough difference I can't put the bottom screws in."

Steve & Fred are both correct. My early tank, no tank number but has the forged
chock rod mount, measures very close to 3.25" using calipers.

Are you working with a REPRO instrument panel? The bottom 2 screw holes on them are off by about 1/8", which is just enough so you can't install the screws.

Can't say. I have 4 or 5 panels and ALL fit my 29 perfectly, none fit my E28.

I'll check tomorrow to see if the lugs have been deformed.

Short choke rods are for the first two generations of gas tanks. The first generation is referred to as the "strap" gas tank. Its choke rod support is made of steel that is rolled flat and is approximately 1/2 way under the tank. The second generation is found in the same position but made of forged steel. The third generation is also made of forged steel and is moved closer to the passenger. Using front/back or forward/distal just don't work as well when describing the location.
