I would say you are on the right track. Sounds like plugged fuel filter to me. When it starts to run poorly, also try reaching out and removing the gas cap, see if that helps. The vent holes could be plugged up (insect nest while car sat, etc.).

It sounds like a fuel delivery issue.. Try driving it with the gas cap loose and see what happens, or, remove it and check for the vents.. Sometimes the gas and radiator cap can get mixed up.. You could remove the fuel line at the carburetor and check for fuel flow and that the fuel line doesn't extend too far into the carburetor.. I think these are the easy things to look at first..

Sounds like it could also be a bad condenser?

Could be something moving around on the bottom of the tank and blocking fuel to the shutoff valve every so often.

Like "gas logged" pieces of cork from the gas gauge float or filler cap or pieces of solder from some one fixing leaks in tank. I am talking about a thin flat piece of solder like you get when you "flick" a gob of hot solder off of a hot iron ... I call them "solder splats".

Looks like a spit ball on the wall!

A "finger filter" that goes inside the shut off valve inlet will prevent these problems.

Trash somewhere in your fuel line, or the hole in the gas cap that allows air into the gas tank is clogged.

I had this happen on a car. There was a tiny piece of crud lodged in the needle and seat of the carburetor. Easy fix and back on the road in no time.
