Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
Why does it show an inline engine?

Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
Probably because that car was built with an inline engine? I don't know what make or model of car it is, if anyone recognizes it (or looks it up ) speak up.

Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
1936 Chevrolet's being assembled. That is the answer for the in line overhead valve six engine. I had a 1936 Chevrolet. My Model "A" had more pep than it had.

Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
Notice the rear springs and small bolt pattern brake drums, definately not Ford in 1936. Looks like a Dodge Brothers emblem on the grille. Rod

Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
I'm surprised by the lack of any African Americans shown on the line. I was under the impression that the UAW was open to all by the mid-Depression.
Henry was very open about being open to all races in the Rouge if the history is correct.

Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
I just watched all four parts. There is no footage of body assembly or the paint dept. Must have been some processes going on in those departments that GM didn't want shown. One thing that did catch my eye was the crankshaft forge.

Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
Thanks for the link to those 4 excellent films. That's the kind of stuff I wish they'd show on factory tours. I noticed in the third film that during the engine run they showed a 1929-30 Chevy engine with it's updraft carb.

Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
Amazing old video. I noticed that even then, GM used 2 sets of palm buttons to accuate the stamping presses. If your hands were on the buttons, then they wouldn't be in the stamping die. I don't think I would have liked standing between those machines that were going back and forth while the assembler was standing right next to all that moving equipment. I worked in a stamping plant for GM for 32 years as an Industrial Truck Mechanic.

Re: 1936 Auto Factory Footage
Roccas - you may want to brush up on your history, here is one example that you can google - "Talking union" By Judith Stepan-Norris, Maurice Zeitlin. The UAW, like all cartels do in one fashion or another, practiced discrimination in many forms well into my lifetime which only began in the late 1950's...
