Default Rear leaf spring in square hole of the frame

Does any one have a suggestion on how to get the square head of the center bolt in the rear spring to go through the square hole in the cross member. I
have used chalk lines to align the centers of each and made sure the head of the bolt is matched to the frame square hole but it simply will not engage. It's a 34 roadster. Thanks for any help

Should go in ? Are you still attached at the shackels? That may cause some misalignment. My bolt head was worn and slightly rounded so at least it found the hole easier, used a jack to hold the spring in rough position , gave it a wack where it need it, felt it was in the hole for sure ,bolted it up bit by bit as I went then used a spring spreader then did up the shackles, mm again they didnt line up all that well but got there eventually..

They sometimes take a bit of levering on the spring to get it in.

I have used a big crecent wrench around the spring pack to help twist things in the right direction. It doesnt take that much effort to get it lined up.

Remember, it needs to be a reasonable fit, it's all that stops you falling over when you go round a corner!

I just jack up the axle into the cross member so that the center bolt is touching the frame some where close to the square hole then I wiggle the axle laterally with both hands on one wheel and it's in. Don't forget the spring pad.
