Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
I am trying to swap out air cleaners on my '33 but the one I want to use won't clamp tight on the carburetor. No matter how tight I make the screw and nut, it still has a lot of play.
Should I try another clamp ? The flange around the bottom of the air cleaner is notched into four sections and seems like they should compress when fully clamped....should I cut those spacings larger ?????

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
Al, apparently, from your information, you've replaced the Model B engine with a V8, but no information on which carburetor setup you have, nor any information on the air cleaner you wish to use. Any responsible answer to your question would require more information from you.

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
It was a "B" but previous owners installed V8 engine.
I use a Stromberg 94 Carb. Air cleaner now is for a '34.....air cleaner I want to use is more original to the '33 engine compartment but the darned thing won't clamp tightly around the top o the carb.....any ideas ??

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
I wanted to replace this air cleaner with the '33 style pointed dome type air cleaner and it will not clamp tightly

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
Al. I soldered some brass shim stock all around the inside of the flange on the air cleaner, also used a different clamp with a long handle and a wing nut at the end, it was from a 1950 Ford if I can remember, hope this solves your dilemma , cheers ...Rusty

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
Hi there, Your carb is not a Stromberg 94, looks more like a Stromberg 48 which was fitted to 34 and 35 V8s. I have the small pointed top helmet style air cleaner on my 34 Ford V8 sedan which was correct for AUSTRALIAN 34s. It tightens up on the carb just fine. You need to have a very close look at the way it clamps on. Those air cleaners were purchased by Ford by an outside supplier (a battery company) who made them to fit other makes of cars besides Ford. Measure the diameter of your carb top and also the closed/tightened diameter of the cleaner neck (off the car). Then operate on it if need be. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
Check the thread on the shaft of the "srewy thing". I had the same problem and found the threads were stripped.

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
A cross section or two of a motorcycle inner tube might work.Use it as a spacer/sleeve around the throat of the carburetor.

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
I also made a thick gasket to fit the top of my carb because the clamp would not tighten up all the way. Used the lid from a plastic coffee can and cut to fit. Works perfectly now.

Re: Air Cleaner Clamp...won't tighten
thanks everyone....... I kinda like Rustyspokes advice, I would feel more at ease knowing whatever adapter I used didn't in turn wiggle loose and the whole air cleaner started bouncing around the engine compartment. I will have to tinker and see what I come up with.
Lanny I appreciate the link!!
