Default V8 rear end.

I took the rear end out of a '35 Convert. sedan yeaterday that is maybe from a '40 with hyd. brakes.
The surface on the pinion for the rear roller bearing is all torn up.
Can I just foget the little roller bearing or is there a sleeve to put on the shaft after it is turned dow?
Can I have a crank grinder grind it down and weld it back up like a crankshaft.

I had the same problem with my 34 and found a sleeve at a bearing store the correct diameter and had a machinist grind down the old shaft and press fit the sleeve onto pinion shaft. So far it's working fine. I would make sure to use a Locktite product called bearing mount which will insure that it stays put.

Answer brings another question. Never thought much about that surface. Would it be ruined by a loose double cup assembly? I never had the tooling to do the preload testing, just guesstimated, but maybe that's a reason to get fussy now. Was the pinion press-in assembly loose when finding this wear?

Yes Barry,
The double nuts were all the way loose and against the pinned sleeve. The rear end made a hhhel of a noise on deleration when it happened.
The ring and pinion are still 'good as new'. Bearings too. Looks like fresh bearings and side gasket shimms.
Many Thanks to Stroker Coupe. I didn't know about sleeves at the bearing shop.
A good way to save $500 & shipping. It has a 3.78 ratio, I don't see any for sale, only 3.54. For city driving in Oakland the 3.78 is perfect.
Preload testing can be done by hand, any drag is fine, too much is bad, too loose is just loose.

Speedway has 3:78's, made by Getz Gears.
I used a set of their 3:54's, no problems.

I got a ball bearing with an inner race that fit right in. Looks like a big generater bearing.
It's together and just fine.
Thanks for the tips guys.
