R10 Overdrive help needed
We are working on a R10-8 Overdrive transmission. This one happens to be in a '48 Lincoln. Where it originally came from-no one knows. The governor gear that is on the output shaft of the overdrive unit just "slips" around the shaft as it turns. Consequently, the governor will not close at 25 mph since the gear is not turning with the shaft. I have looked at another transmission and the governor gear is "keyed" to the shaft. This one has no keyway and the shaft itself is not keyed. There must be something missing and I've searched for diagrams to no avail. Is there an expert out there and is there a place where we can get parts? Photos below.

I don't have a clue about how it was originally held, but Loctite and Permatex make products to secure bearings, sleeves, etc, and sound like it was made for your application.

Re: R10 Overdrive help needed
Those may have been just an interference fit originally. I see R10 output shafts for the later Mercury overdrives on flea-pay now and then but I don't look for the Lincoln stuff. The shaft could be plated back up with hard chrome & ground down to specs or a key way could be cut in both parts by a machine shop but that might be more expensive than another shaft.
You might try some Devcon Plastic Steel on the shaft and gear fit. I used it to hold speedy sleeves on and it worked great for that since it has small metal particles in it. I put some on the shaft and then push the sleeve on then let it set up a few days. |

Re: R10 Overdrive help needed
If I remember correctly the Lincoln still had torque tube, the u-joint was bolted, that could clamp the assembly together
A dimple in the shaft, groove in the gear and a BB (soft ball) to locate the gear |

Re: R10 Overdrive help needed
The ones on my 51 Mercs have a woodruff key to hold the gear so it may have been a problem spot at one time. All it turns is the governor flyweight shaft so it doesn't have a big load on it.

Re: R10 Overdrive help needed
Doug,
I'll check thru my overdrive assortment. I've built a ton of OD's and seem to recall the speedometer is also driven by that gear. Herd to believe Borg Warner pressed that gear in place. Charlie ny |

you may give Mac VanPelt a call. he is very helpful, and may be able to answer your questions and may have some parts, or know where to find some. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/

Re: R10 Overdrive help needed
From ford manual, no key , the spacers clamp the gear when the joint is tightened to the shaft

Re: R10 Overdrive help needed
Sounds reasonable. The gear may be worn to the point where it doesn't turn with the shaft. With the wheels off the ground and the shaft spinning, the gear doesn't move.

Re: R10 Overdrive help needed
That makes sense about the U-joint since those cars were still torque tube drive.
If all the spacers are there then a U-joint needs to be installed & tightened to see if it clamps it up. Barring a problem like the U-joint bottoming out before clamp up, it should work. If not, a person would need to source a longer spacer or a shim somewhere to get the proper clamp up. |

Re: R10 Overdrive help needed
Doug,
Kurt's got it.........all open drive OD's in my stash fix the gear with a key and snap ring. If the hole in the gear is oversize to the point that it worries you perhaps one of my open drive speedo/governor gears would work....let us know. Charlie ny |
