Default So it did have Thermostats/ Sorta?

After driving my new to us '38 Convertible a few weeks I had the impression that it had no thermostats installed. The engine temperature varied quite a bit depending on outside temp. and speed. On Saturday after purchasing new Bob Shewman Thermostats, Upper Hoses, Fresh Coolant and Distilled Water I removed the old upper hoses and old thermostats were sorta there. Both had their tops torn off, I assume,so they had no effect any longer. Wondering why someone did this and why they bothered to leave partials installed? Drove the car twice so far and the engine temperature seems more consistent. Picture show a good original type and what I found.

It's like putting just a large washer in place of the thermostat. Restricts flow.

Here in Minnesota, I agree. But it probably worked okay for a while as the poster mentioned. Best to the poster it didn't over heat. Just was more consistent. It'd be hard to say stats hollowed out made the car hotter then stat that work when heated up. Same restricted flow.
