1932 Rear Hood Retainer Problem
I have a 1932 hood on my 1930 Coupe. The rear hood retainer is supposed to be held in place with 10-32x 1.5" screws. The holes are there in the cowl cover and fire wall but there are no nuts anywhere underneath to tighten the screws so the screws just hang there loose and only prevent the retainer from shifting side to side. I have seen that Snyders sells a rivet-on kit that goes underneath the firewall but I have no access to that area without cutting a hole in the firewall. Out of the question. I wondered about epoxying a pair of 10-32 rivet nuts in the existing holes but thought I would pose this problem to the membership for comments before doing such a thing.
Would anyone have any comments or suggestions for me to solve this issue? |

Re: 1932 Rear Hood Retainer Problem
The nuts that hold the original Model A retainer are 12/24 not 10/32. The nuts may be there but, by using the 10/32 screws they might be falling though the holes in the12/24 nuts. 12/24 screws are not easily found at Home Depot or many of the chain hardware stores, but most of the catalog Model A vendors carry them separately.

Re: 1932 Rear Hood Retainer Problem
I've heard of people using 6x1mm screws instead of #12s, they're very close in size and thread pitch.

Re: 1932 Rear Hood Retainer Problem
I have found #12 machine screws at ACE hardware stores in the little specialty drawers.

Re: 1932 Rear Hood Retainer Problem
Maybe that is my problem, the previous owner used the wrong size screws. I checked mine when I removed the hood and they were 10-32 so I thought they were correct. I will have to check this more closely. The Model A vendors don't tell you what size and pitch screws are included with these items. When I probe the holes it does seem like there is "something" inside that I can move around a little. Maybe that is the nut bobbader is talking about. Thanks, Guys.

Have you looked underneath the gas tank up inside. You should see caged nuts.

Re: 1932 Rear Hood Retainer Problem
To answer, my car does not have a cowl mounted gas tank and I have no idea how to get a look up inside from underneath. Dumb me. I tried my local ACE Hardware, came up empty. I am actually thinking about the 6x1M screws and see if they work. When I probe the screw holes there does seem to be some sort of impedance about 3/4" down in the hole and something can be moved around. I had trouble getting one of the 10-32 screws that were on the car when I bought it in the hole until I probed it and moved something. Maybe that something is a 12-24 nut, I hope I hope I hope.

This is what should be under the cowl to screw the hood hinge retainer into.

Re: 1932 Rear Hood Retainer Problem
One of my favorite sites is boltdepot.com. You can get about any diameter and length in various metals. I have used their stainless steel oval heads in trim areas with a little polishing. The neat thing is you can buy, by the piece without the typical 50 or 100 count box. Here is a link for #12-24 machine screws in slotted flat head steel.https://www.boltdepot.com/Machine_sc...eel_12-24.aspx Back up a page and you can see many head types as well as materials they can supply.
