I've wondered about that also. I'm rebuilding a tranny right now for someone, and will check this out and take pictures if I can find my lost camera.

The cluster gear is the main gear to throw the oil around, and that only turns when the engine is turning it, or if the tranny is in some gear other than neutral.

Houdini, that towbar look like overkill to me, and I'd be leery of barking shins on the protruding pieces.

Years ago tow bars that clamped onto the front bumper were quite common. We used one many times w/out steering problems, including on Model As.
The one time we had a problem (on a VW van w/a homemade towbar) was that the steering box adjustment was overtight and the front wheels wouldn't return to straight after going around a corner, readjusted the steering box and towed that van about 1200 miles w/no problems.

If you're having problems that the towed vehicle doesn't want to track, then there's something wrong with the front end of that vehicle

In 1958 we towed a 31 murray town sedan from Monroe to Lexington Mi. (about 120 miles) with a rope. 2 guys rode in the A to brake when needed. We had no problems at all except when the guys in the A ran out of beer.

In the mid 60's my cousin was using a towbar to tow a Model A Fordor from South Dakota to Michigan. She drove onto the shoulder and rolled the Model A. Her husband left the car at the body shop in Cosmos, MN and never went back for it. It wasn't badly hurt, so someone got a decent Model A for free. The body shop has been gone for many years now, so I can't ask them about it.

If you read back through these posts most of the story's of using a tow bar takes place in the 60's etc... There are now more safe and efficient ways available to tow..
