81A disassembly,rebuilt 30 yrs ago/not used
So I'm bringing this topic back because today I pulled apart the stuck '38 81A that I brought home November 2014 and discussed here on the Barn that had been rebuilt, not fully assembled some 30 years ago, and just pushed under the bench. Had soaked bores with acetone/atf for months and one day it turned over nicely. Due to issues like mismatched hardware, even a mismatched piston, the plan was always to disassemble. I'm just sharing here what I found. To me it appears there may be tin can sleeves in cyls 1 & 2..... but I don't know if that makes sense, bores are .040 over and I see no lip top or bottom. Crank appears nice, its 20/20 and doesn't it appear the cam gear is pressed on a little off?
Tell me what you guys see......

If the bore is .040 over the 2 sleeves are should be cast sleeves bored to .040, yes, the cam is off a bit. Walt

Hi Walt,
Thanks for the response. Guess I'll see if I can get the remaining studs out, been hitting them with PB Blaster for about a year, and off to the machine shop to check out. Now am I correct that I can remove the cast slinger parts at the rear main and replace with later rope seal pieces and use an 8ba crank and rods? Thanks...........

Re: 81A disassembly,rebuilt 30 yrs ago/not used
First the engine has those big round water holes in the center of the head gasket surface on the block. What size in the bore, 3-1/16 +.040 or 3-3/16 + .40? The 8BA crank will fit the block with the 59ab upper aluminum seal retainer and a special aluminum seal retainer that goes in the cap, a lot of places have that cap retainer, try Fred, South Side Obsolete, NOW, the 8ba rods won't fit into the 3-1/16 bore unless it's bored out to 3-3/16. SO, what size is the bore? Walt

Walt, just measured, and it's 3 1/16.
