Cam shaft core/ billet
Ok, so I know people have been regrinding cams forever and it works just fine, ....but I just gotta ask. Let's say someone wanted a particular cam ground by someone here on the Barn like from Pete or Kiwi or wanted to do something like getting a 49/50 Merc 8cm profile on an early shaft, can one buy a cam blank from somewhere, like Isky or Schneider or ????
I'm just wondering....... don't really know why, just curious. Thanks guys. Shoebox

Re: Cam shaft core/ billet
I don't know for sure. But it would be possible if you could obtain the original cam blanks.
Here's a neat article about who makes cams in the USA. http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=264812 |

Re: Cam shaft core/ billet
I believe that Schneider has new cores, and could grind whatever you want if he has the master for it

Re: Cam shaft core/ billet
If your looking for the Merc 8CM profile for an early cam all you need to do is remove the snout off the original Merc cam and then have the offset slot milled into the face of the cam now its an early cam.

the cam needs to be reground on the 21A index to be absolutely correct. It would run fine though as is. |

Thanks for the (informative & nice) responses. At this time I don't have any cams (that I'm going to use) but I do have two engine projects one is 39 Merc 99 block, in heavy car I believe would benefit from a later Merc grind, and an 8BA block destined for something lighter, a candidate for more of an L-100 or the like. In both instances I am just looking at getting new cam billets to provide to cam grinder. Guess I'll touch base with some of the mentioned cam manufactures,.....19Fourty, thanks for the link, that was a good read. Shoebox

Re: Cam shaft core/ billet
I have heard the original Henry metal is better than new cam products.
I have had no problems with the ISKY Max1 in my 8BA but chose a Holman Moody 8BA regrind 400jr. for my current 8BA project.

Re: Cam shaft core/ billet
Billet Blanks, are usually associated with racing cams that have high spring loads, and offer little benefit for a mild street grind. Re grinding a stock cam is a common practice.
