1934-1936 big truck steering box parts
Hi guys hope you all are well, What I am looking for is where can I source a right hand drive worm gear 15to1 or 17to1 ratio for a 1934-36 Ford big truck ? the steering box is what was used in a 1937 Federal truck to convert to RHD here in Australia. these boxes had a 7/8" steering shaft and a 1-1/4 sector shaft with bigger bearings and cups , I have looked every where I know thus far to source the worm and bearings but no luck. can anyone help me please ? the boxes I have are badly water damaged . Mac's advertise parts for the smaller boxes but of course this does not help me any. my email is [email protected]

Re: 1934-1936 big truck steering box parts
Federal Motor Co. here in the USA used components from several different manufacturers depending on the size of truck and Federal manufactured everything from 1 ton on up to big monster trucks back in the day. Finding parts for Federals now it extremely difficult at best so what you're asking may be non existent here in the US. Right hand drive stuff was shipped to Canada if not manufactured there and in other countries where right hand drive systems were required
You need to clean the outer casting and see if a company name is on there like Gemmer, Bendix, Brown & Lipe, etc. I only have experience with Gemmer & Saginaw so I'm limited on information. Gemmer would use the same basic parts for each series of steering gear they made and sometimes the stuff would interchange between a number of years of manufacture. Depending on how it was designed, it may use a similar worm to a left hand set up but I would guess that's not a very likely possibility. You just never know with the big stuff. |
