Default 59A motor old rebuild

A couple weeks ago i bought a 40 coupe that had not run in 4 yrs, was told that it ran hot when it would run. Took left head off to replace gasket, been bored 60 over some cross hatch still in cyls, plugs out on right bank i can just about roll motor over with fan , very tight. Now the question, what should the clearance between the cyl wall and piston be ?
They converted to 12 volt to spin it over, i took it all off and back to 6 volt, 6 v with no plugs spins it ok but put plugs in and will barley move it with new starter. Going to pull motor and redo it,problem has to be piston to cyl wall .

thanks kurt

I use the clearances specified by the piston maker, as well as the ring end gaps. Depends on the materials and use (race vs. street).....forged vs. cast, steel vs. aluminum.

You need to pull the pistons to find out what they are, and also check the ring gaps.

I would think .0015 to .002. Are you using 12v or 6 v battery cables. 6 v cables are considerably bigger.

Have you checked the 6V battery with a hydrometer, not a VO meter......were all the cells good?? I'm having the exact same issue (except the overheating issue) with a 4cyl 9N tractor motor!!!

Maybe you need to spin without plugs to get oil pressure up? Then put plugs in quick and the oil should allow it to spin on 6v

The problem could be many things . . . including a incorrectly setup lower-end with the wrong bearings. I've never had an issue turning over an engine with a good 6V starter and battery. You're wise to take the engine apart, check everything out, mic all components to determine clearances, clean/relubricate, etc..
