1939 pickup progress pics. UPDATE more photos
Dad (Tom) and I have been reassembling our 39 pickup. Here are a few pics of the truck going back together. This truck was a basket case, used and abused. We kept the cab, hood, front and rear fenders. Much of the rest of the truck was tossed out. We used a 59 AB engine we had and the 39 transmission that was in the truck. The passenger side rear frame kick up was cut out and replaced, replaced the bent front axel with a good straight one, new leaf springs front and rear. This poor old truck has had all its components stripped down, cleaned, repaired and reassembled. Many thanks to Fordbarners for all their help so far. Carb & fuel tank by Charlie NY, Bubba for the ignition, Baxter Ford for rebuilding the gauge clusters, Mike's Automotive for all the engine machine work, Mac Hils for the bed & wood, Toby Lampert in VT for the FREE choke and throttle rods. Many thanks to all the barners with 39 pickups who have answered many questions for me (Clem, 39portlander and all the rest of you guys). Thanks also to dad and Jim Sutton. This should make a nice driver.
Just a side note, my grandfather bought this truck back in the early 1970's and hauled it home from northern Indiana near Chicago. The man in the pictures with the hat on is Jim Sutton, a good friend of my late grandfather. Jim was on the trip with my grandpa Ed when he hauled the truck home. This truck was rough and sat in a shed since the 70's until 3 years ago when I dug it out to start a restoration. This is my 3rd total restoration of an early ford and I helped freshen up dad's '47 tudor. This project has proven to be the most challenging thus far. No complaints though, these early fords are just too much fun! Last edited by Seth Swoboda; 02-26-2012 at 10:01 PM. |

Re: 1939 pickup progress pics
A few more pics. May have front and rear fenders mounted next weekend. The wheels and tires are just for rolling around. The 16 inch wide fives are going back on when we get new rubber.

Re: 1939 pickup progress pics
The trouble to a truck this beautiful is: it's useless as a truck, ya just can't throw junk in it, too pretty.

Re: 1939 pickup progress pics
Hi Seth, I'm down in North Carolina at my friend, Christopher,s. Just checking out the old Ford Barn on his computer. Nice job on that 39, brings back memories, soon to be repeated as my 39 has seen 17 years of Vermont Winters and is ready for another restoration. I'll have to fire up Ol' Ron for some mechanical help. I'm so glad that the choke and throttle rods worked for you. Best wishes, Toby Lampert

Re: 1939 pickup progress pics
Post some more pics of your 39 pickup when you have time. I remember seeing it on the front page of the barn, it is a very clean and well done project. These trucks are very unique in their own way, we would love to see more of them!

Re: 1939 pickup progress pics
It took a crew to get this much done this fast. Jim Sutton and I work most saturdays and sundays and dad (Tom/Illinois) joins us saturday afternoon's when he closes up shop. I wish you guys were closer, we really enjoy working on these early fords.

Re: 1939 pickup progress pics
Seth, looking real nice, it maybe me eyes, or screen, but some photo's make the truck look black, and the other definitely blue. It's all the same truck I'm thinking the lighting and angle?

Re: 1939 pickup progress pics
You're correct the truck is all Jefferson Blue except the running boards they are black. The lighting in the shop makes some of the pictures look dark. It also needs a good bath, wet sanded and buffed yet. We have the new tires mounted on the correct wide five rims now. This old girl will be ready for the road very soon.

Re: 1939 pickup progress pics
I'm currently building a 39 pickup myself and have been scratching my head about hooking the radiator up to the engine. The lower hoses of the radiator are about 1-1/4" lower than the water pumps and the lower radiator hoses specific to the truck are straight. Did you have to bend yours at all?
