Default 1939 pickup progress pics. UPDATE more photos

Dad (Tom) and I have been reassembling our 39 pickup. Here are a few pics of the truck going back together. This truck was a basket case, used and abused. We kept the cab, hood, front and rear fenders. Much of the rest of the truck was tossed out. We used a 59 AB engine we had and the 39 transmission that was in the truck. The passenger side rear frame kick up was cut out and replaced, replaced the bent front axel with a good straight one, new leaf springs front and rear. This poor old truck has had all its components stripped down, cleaned, repaired and reassembled. Many thanks to Fordbarners for all their help so far. Carb & fuel tank by Charlie NY, Bubba for the ignition, Baxter Ford for rebuilding the gauge clusters, Mike's Automotive for all the engine machine work, Mac Hils for the bed & wood, Toby Lampert in VT for the FREE choke and throttle rods. Many thanks to all the barners with 39 pickups who have answered many questions for me (Clem, 39portlander and all the rest of you guys). Thanks also to dad and Jim Sutton. This should make a nice driver.

Just a side note, my grandfather bought this truck back in the early 1970's and hauled it home from northern Indiana near Chicago. The man in the pictures with the hat on is Jim Sutton, a good friend of my late grandfather. Jim was on the trip with my grandpa Ed when he hauled the truck home. This truck was rough and sat in a shed since the 70's until 3 years ago when I dug it out to start a restoration. This is my 3rd total restoration of an early ford and I helped freshen up dad's '47 tudor. This project has proven to be the most challenging thus far. No complaints though, these early fords are just too much fun!

A few more pics. May have front and rear fenders mounted next weekend. The wheels and tires are just for rolling around. The 16 inch wide fives are going back on when we get new rubber.

That coil came from Bubbas Ignition. This truck is 12v, electronic. I will make that purple coil black yet.

Cecil, It doesn't look like I can make it to Hiawasee. I wanted to go but I get married the week before on June 2nd. I can't convince Nicole that the Hiawasee meet would make a great honeymoon......

The trouble to a truck this beautiful is: it's useless as a truck, ya just can't throw junk in it, too pretty.

JMO but most of the new trucks don't get used as trucks anymore either.

Hi Seth, I'm down in North Carolina at my friend, Christopher,s. Just checking out the old Ford Barn on his computer. Nice job on that 39, brings back memories, soon to be repeated as my 39 has seen 17 years of Vermont Winters and is ready for another restoration. I'll have to fire up Ol' Ron for some mechanical help. I'm so glad that the choke and throttle rods worked for you. Best wishes, Toby Lampert

Thanks Charlie. You have been a great help with your vast carb & ingnition systems knowledge. You are truly a kind and helpful person. For those that don't know Charlie he is one of what I call "charter members" of Fordbarn. There are many of these guys and I will post about them later so I don't mean to leave anyone out. Dad & I got to know Charlie on the barn and met him in person in Auburn. We have one of the best right here in Charlie. If you don't know Charlie, you really should soon.

Charlie, we hope to meet up again soon and in the company of early Fords.

I purchased the bed from Mac Hils Products in Moberly, Missouri. Great folks to deal with and very helpful. Dad and Jim Sutton drove there and picked the bed up. In fact Jim just finihsed a '51 F1 and they brought back both beds together. Post some pics of your project when you get time, we would love to see them!

Post some more pics of your 39 pickup when you have time. I remember seeing it on the front page of the barn, it is a very clean and well done project. These trucks are very unique in their own way, we would love to see more of them!

No paint roller Cecil. Just some plastic and cotton stuffing left over from the upholstry job on the seat and other odds and ends. The truck is Jefferson Blue, PPG base/clear.

I can't go to Hiawasee, I am getting married the week before and Nicole didn't want to go to Hiawasee for a honeymoon, what the heck is wrong with her?? HA HA!! Dad and I will try and see you all as soon as possible.

It took a crew to get this much done this fast. Jim Sutton and I work most saturdays and sundays and dad (Tom/Illinois) joins us saturday afternoon's when he closes up shop. I wish you guys were closer, we really enjoy working on these early fords.

Seth, looking real nice, it maybe me eyes, or screen, but some photo's make the truck look black, and the other definitely blue. It's all the same truck I'm thinking the lighting and angle?

You're correct the truck is all Jefferson Blue except the running boards they are black. The lighting in the shop makes some of the pictures look dark. It also needs a good bath, wet sanded and buffed yet. We have the new tires mounted on the correct wide five rims now. This old girl will be ready for the road very soon.

I'm currently building a 39 pickup myself and have been scratching my head about hooking the radiator up to the engine. The lower hoses of the radiator are about 1-1/4" lower than the water pumps and the lower radiator hoses specific to the truck are straight. Did you have to bend yours at all?
