Default Carb help?

A friend of mine called and asked me to take a look at a carb for him from his 46 ford pickup. He said that he was having trouble getting the ball out from under the accelerator pump.

I wasn't able to help because I found that it was a one barrel stock carb from a 6 cyl.

At the bottom of the pump hole was what looked like a plate with two 1/16" holes. He said he had removed a lock ring already but couldn't remove the plate to clean or replace the ball.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated and add a little to my knowledge bowl.

Those ball checks do get corroded but I have had success getting them out by doing this: After removing the lock ring put some penatrate in the bottom of the cavity and with a small tipped punch give the ball a light rap. Hold your finger over the outlet for the accelerator nozzle ( at the venturi) and work the accelerator pump plunger up and down a few times. This should loosen the ball. Turn the disassembled body upside down and slap it down firmly on a flat surface. That little ball should come out. If it doesn't the first time do the process again. Air pressure applied to accelerator pump inlet hole in the bowl may also force it loose but hold you hand over the cavity to catch the ball.

Thanks, Fourdy, for posting my problem. Dee is assuming we already have the cover off the ball check. The cover at the bottom of the accelerator pump shaft is just not going to come out. On Friday, I'll go to Mac's Wrecking Yard and see if he has another carb body.

There is no cover in the bottom of the pump hole. Only thing that holds the ball in is the wire clip.Soak with kroil or PB blaster and try to blow it out fron the float bowl corner hole. Slam down hard on a block of wood. Most of the time they will come out.It has to be free to drop out on its own when turned upside down.Ive had good luck getting them out. You got to work at it. You could get in the same situation with a junk yard carb. Try what i suggested and give us a heads up. ken ct.

I was able to find this on the web. Note paragraph 3 that tells about the disc at the bottom. This was taken from a manual for the carb. Does this make sense. Thanks again.

Ive rebuilt probebly 50 of those Holley #847 6 cyl. carbs and there is no piece like described in your post in them.In fact i did 2 of them last week. All that holds that ball in is the wire clip.Your talking about 41-51 carb arn't you. ken ct.

I've destroyed the carb body trying to get the non-existent cover out of there. When I removed the wire clip it was not covering the ball. Live and learn. Now I'm looking for another carb body. I have a lead on one and I'll check it out tomorrow.

Thanks to Fourdy, Dee and Ken ct for your help. Information is a wonderful thing. I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving.
