Hey guys,

Any tips for reinstalling the stainless center strip to join the two hood pieces for a 33 hood?

Thanks!

Brad

Lay the hood sides upside down no the grass, and lube up the strip and hood sides ,make sure there is not a build up of paint on the hood where the strip goes.
I used a plastic hammer the tap the strip on.

On the 33 roadster I did two years ago it helped to raise one side of the hood slightly.

Thanks guys..

I was wondering about lube. There is no paint currently, just primer.

I'll get my son to help out.

That primer gonna be an issue with lube? Thinking painting it in the future.

Not sure Martin.

I am thinking there will be a lot of prep work before paint and that will include cleaning and degreasing. Would that not be adequate?

As I recall (and that's a challenge somedays) I had primed the hood with 1 coat of epoxy primer then applied a couple of coats or more of filler primer sanding in between with guide coats then I sanded the groove in the hinge carefully to rid of the build up consciously not to go to bare metal. Then I took the old stainless strip and gently installed it on one side at a time time to rid of any remnants of any obstruction to slide it on before the final paint (including sealer) being applied. After painting I then put put it on two horses and put heavy shipping blanket on both taped to hold still also taping lint free towels on top of the shipping blankets not to scratch finish. Then I put a thin layer of Vaseline on the strip and probably the groove as well where it slides into. Gently tapping (with a rubber tipped hammer) the strip onto both sides of the hood and like said above lifting one side or the other if I came up against some resistance. Go Slow! Sorry if I left out a few steps of the painting process before.

Brad,
My concerns are that a lot of primers are kinda "open pore" as in they can absorb moisture. I believe the epoxy ones seal properly and don't absorb moisture.
If the lube is absorbed, not sure a degreaser will get it out. This could compromise paint adhesion.
I'd think if it's got epoxy primer, it would be fine.
Martin.

I don't use grease or Vaseline and have never had a problem installing the hood hinge strip or raising either side of the hood once installed. It is a two-person job and works easiest if you fold the two hood top panels into a V before installing the hood hinge strip.

I seriously doubt if Ford used any lubricant originally.

Agreed, but I use those modern paint products and still do not lubricate the hood hinge.
