Default Speedometer suddenly quit

The speedometer suddenly quit working last night It has been "bouncing" some, but otherwise OK. What do you think is the probable problem?
Please tell me it will be easy to fix.
Thanks

I would check the cable first. If that is good then It would be in the speedometer. papanick

I would unscrew the cable from the speedometer and make sure the speedometer turns freely.
Be sure the cable has no kinks and is well lubed.

What's the best way to check the cable?
Unhook from transmission and see if the cable pulls out of the sheath?

You'll probably find the cable needs to be removed from the top end.
Just look at the cable and housing for kninks or frayed/broken strands.

Hioridge - My speedo suddenly quite. I unscrewed the cable sheath from the bottom of the transmission, pulled on the cable inside it, and it came out. The cable twisted into two pieces. This would be a quick check.

If that's not it; Tom is correct the cable sheath needs to be removed at the speedo to remove the cable.

My speedo became increasingly hard to turn and twisted the cable. I repaired the speedo by using instructions I found. Removed all the old grease, and lubricated all bearing and gear surfaces. Caution - the speedo must turn VERY freely to operate properly and not continue to twist the cable. (I had to buy another cable because I had not freed it up enough.) It takes a lot of cleaning and lubing (and time) to get the speedo to spin freely.

There are numerous speedo repairers, and they are very good at what they do.

Good luck,

The cause of the failure of the cable is the speedometer is becoming harder to turn internally. Until you service the speedometer head you will continue to have cable failures due to the problem in the speedometer head.

If you don't have time to do it right the 1st time, how do you have time to do it the 2nd time?

This is good advise. Make sure the speedo is turning easy. And the only way to do that is to take it loose from the top at the speedo. I had same problem because my speedo was not moving easy and it broke the cable.
