Seems like maintaining your coolant at the correct Ph is very important too.
As stated grade 5 bolts and steel lock washers (not stainless)
If it makes you feel more comfortable, paint them with a coat of non-hardening Permatex after installation.

I often wonder who the people are that have joined the Flathead group. You're getting an education in automotive mechanics. People with out a mechanical back ground might have some trouble getting a hang on some of the methods necessary to accomplish a simple task. However, The more you work on these things the more you'll learn and that will help you in other areas. Putting that bolt in the water pump, is probably the easiest think you'll do. Just wait till you get to the valves.

A short 6 point socket is a handy tool to have and short extension. Along with leaving everything untightened until the last bolt is home.

We use a stainless bolt from a local hardware store. No need to buy a special bolt from a vendor. If the original bolt is rusty or corroded, you can bet that is true of the entire water jacket, and means the coolant is past due for a change. We recommend a bottle of rust inhibitor be added to the system annually. It is available whereever anti freeze is sold.

Might be able to align holes with outer bolts loose by using a stubby phillips screwdriver. I use a piece of masking tape on the bolt head instead of the brown paper. Chap
