1937 ford differential removal
What is the best procedure in removing the drive shaft from the differential?

Welcome to the Fordbarn, Papa! Your project is fairly simple.
Put the car frame on 4 blocks. Remove the rear wheels. Disconnect the rear cable brakes. Put a floor jack under the differential. Remove the shock links. Drop the spring off the U bolts. Remove the universal joint bell housing. With the floor jack on the differential, drag the assembly back and out, while paying attention to the torque tube bell housing to clear the crossmember. Read what others will post also, 'cause without doubt, I'm sure to have missed something!

use a small abrasive wheel to grind the head of the rivet, then drive the rivet out with a suitable sized pin punch.

Tell us something about your project and what you are trying to accomplish. Post title says differential removal while message asks how to remove driveshaft from differential. I think ford38v8 does a good job of explaining how to remove the complete rear but what are you actually trying to do?

I am putting a mitchell in my stock 37 ford. I have the engine and transmission out of vehicle. Would I still have to remove the differential from the vehicle? or can I just safely remove the drive shaft? Can I just remove the the two braces (that connect to the drive line) without damaging anything?

You'll have to put the blocks on the axles to raise the banjo as high as possible. Disconnect the radius arms from the center, pull the 8 ? bolts at the banjo. Move the tube forward to get to the pin. Hotcoupe advises to use an abrasive wheel to cut the head of the pin, but be careful to not cut beyond the pin itself. One more thing... Pull the speedo turtle and the keeper ring at the front, and slide off the speedo gear from the driveshaft.

I would definately pull the rear axle. You're going to have trouble dealing with the X member /driveshaft anyway.... and are going to have to put the mitchell and new shortened driveshaft together, so Do yourself a favor and do it out of the car. It's four nuts for the rear spring, and a couple of brake clevises for mechanical brakes, or a connection for hydraulic if so equipped. I have rebuilt many rear axles and trying to deal with it like that in the car is crazy. You're going to have to pull the front torque tube bearing, and speedo gear/snap ring anyway.
Also.. if the rear axle bearings have not been rebuilt/serviced.. now is the time. If you're putting in a mitchell and going faster you will want to make sure the rear axle is at it's best. Carrier preload/pinion backlash all need to be set properly. There's plenty of good documentation on this. If you're not familiar find someone in your area who is schooled at them. Larry S |
