Sooty Plugs
I had to remove the head from my car so as to replace the Babbet on #1 rod Found the plugs to be so sooty you cant even see the porcelain. They are the big plugs. I run the GAV open only 1/8th in. when on the road. Car runs smooth and accelerates just fine.Think maybe a new set of smaller Motorcraft Hotter plugs from the vendor might be the answer? What say ye GURU s Thanks

Re: Sooty Plugs
They are big plugs. What plug are they? Your carb could be running rich.

If you make long drives and the plugs don't burn clean, then you'll need a hotter plug. |

Re: Sooty Plugs
my plugs always seem black... I do short drives as well and thought that was the issue.

Re: Sooty Plugs
Most good running "A'S" with a proper heat range plugs, need to be driven with "GUSTO" at times to keep the plugs burning clean I run the Motorcraft Plugs, don't remember the # but they NEVER need cleaning. I run 20 to 30 in second a lot in heavy city traffic to help keep them clean. Running in second in heavy traffic also helps a lot in slowing down quickly for a jerk driver or an unexpected traffic light change. I'm an oooooold, but DEFENSIVE driver! I was impressed by a book I read years ago, "MR. SMITH'S DEFENSIVE DRIVING," written by a guy named Mr. Smith! (The dang Dog's laughin' agin'----I just told him that Gregg read the same book when he was in school too, So there, smart assed DOG!) Bill W.

Re: Sooty Plugs
your either driving short trips, running too rich, or need a hotter plug. Whats your MPG? Around 16 in city, 18-20 hwy is right. If you're getting that, move up to W18Y champions or motorcraft T110. If your getting 14 mpg, get turn down the GAV and/or get a rebuilt carb that has had the jets flow tested.
