Default '29 fordor cowl band value

I am selling a '29 fordor cowl for a ratrod. He said I could pull the cowl band with the plating gone. is it worth pulling?

I don't know what it's worth, but it's worth pulling.

Let me know how removing the under band clips goes, I've got a cowl with them that will be on the market when I get around to removing them. Bob

Yes its worth pulling since they only fit that and the Cabriolet. They are a bear to remove. Get several of the plastic windshield installation tools (bones) and maybe try to get some wd40 or silicone lubricant under the band to help it slip off. They bend very easily so take your time, take your time, take your time!

I've seen just the '29 cowl band (without the mounting strip that is permanently attached to the cowl section) go from a low of $100 for an unrestored "take-off" up to a high of $600 for one that was straightened and plated. They are brass and are easily damaged because of the softness of the metal.

Those '29 Fordor cowl bands are scarce and if you can find a nice one it should be worth some good money.
They are pretty soft and easy to bend as they are removed if you're not extra careful.
As original they are a compression fit over the ridge on the cowl with no other clips or anything holding them on unless someone has added some kind of fasteners over the years.
I've found that if you take something to cut the paint along the front and back edges of the band all the way up and over the sides and top of the cowl it will help. Then take something to insert between the bottom of the cowl band leg and the cowl and start gently prying it away from the cowl.
Go slow, be careful and think pure thoughts and it should come loose.

We used the Universal Tire DD molding (brass) and formed it over the retaining base, had it polished and nickle plated, very pleased with the results. I think the total cost was under $300.

I have a cowl band in great shape that I pulled off a 29 murray cowl with little trouble. Call me if anyone would like to purchase it. Backing still on cowl if someone wants to convert to a town sedan. Alfi (408) 354-3875

As I recall, I've got about $600 in mine by the time I had it plated by that outfit in Wisconsin that advertises in Hemmings, and then paying a body guy to install it.

Financing was managed by making it a Christmas present.

Whoa Sure glad my 28 Phaeton and 29 Tudor don't use a cowl band.

Another plus for my 28 is no outside door handles.
