Front Main Spring
My new barn fine ‘28 Sport Coupe A toy.
The first time, I have seen “boot wraps” on each side of the front spring. What are their purpose? They look some what original - older and dried out - each about 10 “ in length. Thanks for your thoughts Dave Last edited by dlfrisch; 01-21-2020 at 09:40 AM. Reason: Grammar - their ...... dried out |

Re: Front Main Spring
Boots keep the grease/oil inside and the dust and road grime outside. Ford did offer them as an original accessory. I think the ones from Ford were leather or pleather. I wish my car had them. I'm going to get a set when I rebuild the front end.

Re: Front Main Spring
These are the covers I got when I cleaned and re-lubed both springs. Worked pretty well, fit was good. I kinda went overboard soaking the felt in oil, so I had oil puddles behind the wheel hubs for a couple of weeks afterward.

Re: Front Main Spring
I just used motor oil on mine, any suggestions on weight of oil when I renew oil. No squeaks and coupe rides great.

Re: Front Main Spring
I think you could literally use oil straight out of the drain plug if you wanted.

Re: Front Main Spring
I also have a 1959 Triumph TR3 and the original service manual states use the drain oil after each oil change to paint the leaf springs. I don't think the meant using all five quarts.

Re: Front Main Spring
Using any type of liquid (oil) or paste (grease) type lube on leaf springs is bad practice. Even with spring covers or wrapping with vinyl tape, dirt will get in and create abrasive grit that both increases spring rate and accellerates wear.
Two good methods or lubing springs are Teflon strip between leaves or polishing the leaves and painting them with MOLYKOTE or SLIPLATE. |
