Routing rear brake lines- '39-type on an AV8
Good Morning All:
Happy Easter. I've been planning out the "correct" and best looking way to run the rear brake lines on my AV8 ('28 on '32 frame). I have Tardell's book and I think I'd prefer to run them the way ford did by going down rear radius rods and around the back of the banjo housings and not over the top like Tardell does. I have the correct "blocks" coming for the back of M/C and to split the lines down the radius rods. Here are my questions or request for pictures. Picts. may be easier than explaining. 1) How or where does the rear flex line attach to give the rear it's ability to pivot? 2) I'll get picts later of the part, but that 1/2 a hour glass part that bolts in between the mounting point of the radius rods, is part of this pivoting design I'd assume. 3) If there is a better way to do it, I'm open to that as well. Thanks all. |

Re: Routing rear brake lines- '39-type on an AV8
It's probably best to just copy the 40 setup.
The T piece that attaches to the radius rod and splits the brakes to each side has a male piece that screws into a short flexible hose that has female threads in both ends. A normal 1/4" brake pipe and tube nut goes in the other end. Personally I'd keep the tubes on top of the axle, less likely to be damaged there. But look out for pinching between the axle and frame in a non stock application. Just get them out of the way. Mart. |

As I trailer my cars often to race or show I run the lines down the radius rods. I am wary of pinching the brake lines with the hold down straps around the axle bells. I have also run a single line attached to the torque tube and split into two lines at the rear near the center section.

Here is what I did. Over top of axle using cunifer tubing and stainless rock guard. Flex line from front Ford T to master cylinder.

For some reason, when Ford adopted that system the rear cylinders have the entry point pointing to the rear when the cylinders are fitted the right way round. Actually visualising the different bore sizes, it makes sense for it to be towards the rear, or at least not towards the front.
That makes it slightly less natural for the brake run when running down along the radius arm. |

If its an A with the spring on top of the rear. Save yoursel some trouble and clock the backing plates to the rear and run the lines down the radius rods

Thanks, all.
Skids: I'm going with the spring behind so I don't have that issue. Thanks, all. I have that double female flex hose on the way. Another question, looking at the picts. that were posted, I don't need to use these two parts? What is the smaller, rectangle piece used for? Thanks, Tim |
