Default 32 fuel pump check valve removal

I'm having trouble getting my fuel pump to, well, pump. When I detected the problem (car wouldn't start) and determined the carb was getting no fuel, I used a rebuild kit on the pump for everything except the check valves. I couldn't get them out. I put the pump back on and it still doesn't work.

So a local car nut came over and he was able to get the valve out with the top (raised circle) exposed but not the one that has the "X" pattern showing in the attached photo. We tried getting that one out by using a screwdriver through the side access hole but it won't budget. We also tried twisting the "X" with needlenose pliers but it wouldn't move. Any tricks to suggest? I am not trying to salvage that particular valve, just get it out easily without denting the pump housing.

Maybe warm the casting with a heat gun from the outside. Those are just pressed in.

Do you have replacements for those? maybe they are just stuck and air or vacuum might make them operational.

If you have no success - send it to Charlie NY - he has all the tools to rebuild these things and to ensure that the valves actually seal.

I've never fiddled with pumps(yet) and this might be a stupid idea but....how about cutting a "+" into one end of a nut with a hacksaw.Place the cut end of the nut on the valve and a wrench on the other and wiggle it loose. It might work.I dunno.

The AC pumps have removable valves. That is why they are in demand and considered rebuildable. The other ones ,like yours are considered "not rebuildable". If you have an AC branded pump in your stash, that would work fine.
I am sure Charlie can redo it for you.
Just an opinion

Got a couple of private msgs asking what type of fuel pump I have. It is an Offenhauser. No idea if that is appropriate to the year.

I have never tried to take a valve out of a fuel pump, but it looks like the outlet valve to me. I would think you could attach a grease gun to the output fitting and force it out with grease.

Regards,

Brian

In regard to your post #9 above. There are a couple of slightly different 32 fuel pumps (tall & short) here is a short, pictured. To answer your question the fuel pump you wish to rebuild is not appropriate to 32. It is actually a modern replacement to replace the late 33-42 pump.

Terry, he isn't working on a 32 pump, it is a later one.

This has been illuminating. My dad bought this car back in the early 70s and sold it to me about 10 years ago. He did very little to it and my understanding was that it was pretty much intact. I am discovering little (?) changes that were made before he got it (which I get is common). First I learn the carb is from a 34, then see a firewall mounted coil is a later change. I'm hearing that the engine has slanted drain cocks so might be a few years later. Now the fuel pump is a modern "upgrade." It's like a detective novel.

Anyway, I guess my question is since the fuel pump isn't vintage, should I just dump in and get another? If so, what are the thoughts on trying to get a rebuilt "correct" 32, get a rebuilt later 30s pump, or just get another modern one? I drive the car maybe 20 miles per year and am trying to preserve as much of it as a I can.

By all means get another pump, NAPA sells them or somebody like me can sell you
one. I'm not sure but I think you might need a '32 or '33 intake to use a typical '32 pump. Pretty sure you'll find '32 pumps are pricey. That's a way cool car, why not just
install a replacement pump and drive it.
Your Offenhauser pump is a throw away item, please believe me and Floyd.

Or install a hidden 6v electric pump plus filter leaving the defunct mechanical pump as a decoration. This assuming free flow and no leaks.

And your car privately told me that it wants more exercise. Garage queens get arthritis.

I want to take the car out but it's anorexic and can't move. That's why I'm trying to supply it with food.

Ok, I'm also kind of a purist and like to keep things as original as practical. So if there's a way to *easily* restore it to a 32 pump, that would be my preference. Second would be using a later 30s pump. Thirdly would be using a modern off-the-shelf piston pump. Last would be something electric. I want to make sure it is reliable though. I finally broke down and put a fuel pump in my 62 MGA that had the guts removed and a solid state inside put in.

No easy way to install a 32 pump. Get a replacement to fit your manifold. The earlier pumps did not use the glass bowl, however they are interchangeable through 1948.

Not that it matters here but your carb , manifold and fuel pump stand are newer than 34 .

I knew the carb was from a mid-30's but didn't know the manifold was newer. That probably makes sense if the engine is a newer year. What should I get if I wanted to get something reasonably appropriate for what's already there?
